Certain motorists could be looking at a charge of 14p per mile under a new car tax plan from Rachel Reeves, set to be announced on Wednesday. The Labour Party Chancellor is expected to unveil a pay-per-mile road pricing scheme for electric vehicles (EVs) in this month's Autumn Budget Statement.
However, ahead of the new rate, which is supposed to be 3p per mile, EV owners without driveways who utilise 'fast' chargers (9kW to 49kW) are already paying more.
For these drivers and road users , the average cost per mile rises to 13.79p. That's higher than the current running costs of a petrol (11.82p per mile) or diesel car (10.18p), according to experts.
