KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Nearly 2,000 people are living without a home in Knoxville and during National Homelessness Awareness Month, one local group is working to meet their medical needs.
Knox Street Medicine Outreach (KSMO) , a nonprofit that provides medical care to people experiencing homelessness, says its volunteers are especially busy as temperatures drop. The organization started about three years ago.
“It was a huge need,” Dr. Danielle Darter, KSMO's founder, explained.
Dr. Darter also serves as an associate family medicine professor at Lincoln Memorial University (LMU)'s DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine (DCOM) .
When Darter moved to Knoxville, she realized there wasn’t a street medicine outreach program serving people without shelter.
