Andy Burnham will be allowed to introduce a tourist tax as the government reveals the new powers will be handed to mayors across England. The new tourist tax will be levied on overnight stays if local mayors choose to introduce the measure, the government said.

Announcing the move ahead of the Budget tomorrow (November 26), the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) said that local leaders in England will be given the power to impose a 'modest charge' on visitors. It follows years of lobbying by Greater Manchester mayor and many of his colleagues who want the tax to help pay for public transport and other local services.
