What we know so far about Andy Burnham's new tourist tax

Mayors like Andy Burnham will be allowed to introduce a tourist tax, the government has revealed. The announcement was made on Tuesday (November 25) - a day before the budget - and follows years of lobbying by local leaders across the country.

If local mayors choose to introduce the measure, a 'modest charge' will be levied on overnight stays. Any new levy would apply to visitors at accommodation providers including hotels, holiday lets, bed and breakfasts, and guesthouses.
