Disco Elysium is bar none the best-written (important distinction) RPG ever made. Unfortunately, everyone else in the gaming industry has realized this as well, and the stream of competing spiritual successors announced in the wake of the original team's shattering was truly biblical.
We can throw another one onto the pile, though: Esoteric Ebb, from the same publisher that put out the pretty good puzzler American Arcadia. Penchant for alliterative names aside, Esoteric Ebb is setting itself aside from the teeming competition by setting itself in a pure fantasy universe and being really insufferably written.
I get it, Disco Elysium had some true laugh-out-loud moments, and a lot of that came from its unique skill system (which Ebb is trying to pretend is a new idea it had). Leaning into
