New details reveal the chilling callousness shown by a driver accused in a hit-and-run crash that killed a 37-year-old Selden woman, prosecutors said.
Lan Truong, 44, of Selden, was indicted on one count of leaving the scene of an incident without reporting in Suffolk County Court on Tuesday, Nov. 25, in connection with the death of Victoria “Vicky” Hutson.
It came weeks after Hutson was fatally struck while walking along Boyle Road near Village Lane in Selden at around 11:20 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5, as Daily Voice previously reported.
An investigation found that Truong drove his Toyota Camry onto the right shoulder of northbound Boyle Road and struck Hutson as she walked, prosecutors said. The impact threw her into the roadway.
Instead of calling authorities, Truong stopped at the next intersection, walked back to Hutson, dragged her into the shoulder, and fled while bystanders rushed to help, according to investigators. Hutson died at the scene.
Detectives later found Truong’s Camry behind his home with blood on the windshield, passenger door, and window, prosecutors said. The vehicle was seized as evidence. Truong was arrested the following day, on Wednesday, Nov. 6.
In court Tuesday, Truong was also charged with operating a motor vehicle without a license. A judge ordered him held on a $400,000 bond. He faces up to seven years in prison if convicted on the top count.
‘A Light in Our Family’
As the case moves forward, Hutson’s family is sharing their heartbreak and the memories of a woman they say radiated warmth and love.
“Vicky was more than a daughter, sister, wife and aunt — she was a light in our family and in the lives of everyone who knew her,” her brother, Tommy Hutson, told Daily Voice. “She had a pure heart, a kind spirit, and a smile that could brighten the darkest day.”
The Hutsons are a family of 12 siblings. Tommy said his sister had a remarkable gift for making each person feel seen and valued.
“She was the life of every gathering — laughing, dancing, and making sure everyone felt included,” he said. “Family meant everything to her.”
