MUSKEGON, MI – A 55-year-old woman has been charged for allegedly sitting on her 11-year-old adoptive daughter, resulting in the girl’s death.

Additional charges for child abuse could be filed against Sherry Leak as the ongoing investigation unfolds, a Muskegon County prosecutor said.

Leak was arraigned Tuesday, Nov. 25, in Muskegon County District Court on a manslaughter charge, a 15-year felony.

The case began on Sunday, Nov. 23, when Fruitport Township police responded to the Leak family home , in the Clover Estates Mobile Home Community, on a report of an unresponsive child.

When rescuers arrived, they could not revive the girl, who has been identified as Mialah Leak. Fruitport Community Schools announced the her death on Monday. She was a fifth-grader at Shettler Elementary.
