The Government has announced an extension of the soft drinks industry levy to include milk-based drinks containing high sugar content.

The so-called 'sugar tax' was introduced by the Conservative government in April 2018 in a bid to tackle obesity.

Back in April of this year, a consultation began to discuss the potential removal of an exemption which is in place for more than 200 milk drinks, as well as non-dairy substitutes.

In last year's autumn budget , Rachel Reeves said she would consider broadening the tax to include milk drinks like supermarket milkshakes and ready-to-drink coffees.

The Treasury has now confirmed plans to go ahead with this extension in an effort to protect children and improve health .
