Adults with complex developmental disabilities are falling through the cracks in the social services system, “languishing” in hospital instead of receiving proper care, Ontario’s ombudsman says in a scathing new report.
Paul Dube blames two ministries — health and community and social services — for repeatedly dropping the ball following a 2016 investigation into the problem.
“This is unacceptable,” he told a news conference Tuesday, citing several cases — including a 57-year-old man named Jack who spent eight years in hospital only to die three months after being placed in appropriate care.
“They weren’t there for medical reasons, but because there was nowhere else for them to go. In case after case, their conditions worsened in hospital.”
