KEWANEE, Ill. (KWQC) - Police said a resident in Kewanee received a fake letter and check that claimed to be from the Prevent Cancer Foundation.
The Kewanee Police Department said the letter included instructions telling the resident to deposit the check into their bank account.
The letter then directed the resident to buy gift cards using most of the money, promising the resident could keep $1,000 as a “thank you” for their help, police said.
Police said residents should not deposit the check, buy gift cards or interact with anyone associated with the scam.
The Prevent Cancer Foundation has no involvement with the scam. Police said the foundation is being impersonated.
If something feels off, police said, trust your instincts.
