Labour repeatedly vowed during the 2024 General Election campaign that it would not raise taxes on "working people", in a promise made at least 52 times by Keir Starmer , Rachel Reeves and a slew of Labour MPs. The pledge was written into the party’s manifesto, which stated: "Labour will not increase taxes on working people [...] we will ensure taxes on working people are kept as low as possible", with the Prime Minister even saying to the Sunday Express that it was "cast iron".
Now, a dossier seen by the Express shows how Labour politicians spent weeks attempting to reinforce the message in interviews across television, radio and in newspapers, despite going on to hike National Insurance for employers just months into Government.
