SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — Just two days before Thanksgiving, a group of volunteers in South Portland was hard at work. They're not roasting turkeys but baking pies. Their mission? Making sure no one misses out on dessert this holiday.
Inside the First Congregational Church UCC, the kitchen buzzes with activity. It’s not a bake sale or a potluck. It's a pie-making marathon organized by Ellen Clancy.
For more than two decades, Clancy has led the effort known as Pies for Preble, which donates homemade pies to Preble Street, a nonprofit providing outreach and meals to Mainers experiencing homelessness.
“They provide Thanksgiving meals for 600 people,” Clancy said. “And we are a major pie-producing entity for them.”
