COLUMBUS — Police officers can have their identities redacted from public records if they are attacked in the line of duty, the Ohio Supreme Court ruled Tuesday.
The case was brought by the Columbus Dispatch after the Columbus Police Department refused to provide the newspaper with unredacted footage of a shootout involving two police officers and an armed robbery suspect.
Writing for the majority, Justice Pat DeWine said police officers who are attacked in the line of duty qualify as victims under the “Marsy’s Law” provisions amended into the Ohio Constitution and that public records can be redacted under a related state law on victims’ rights.
