WASHINGTON — Longtime Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., who announced earlier this year that he won’t seek another term in 2026, has made his support for Ukraine and his rejection of isolationist policies well known.

Last week, he released a statement critical of the 28-point peace plan for Ukraine negotiated by the U.S. and Russia to end Russia’s nearly four-year war on Ukraine.

That plan would require Ukraine to cede land captured by Russia, shrink its military and agree to never pursue NATO membership.

“Putin has spent the entire year trying to play President Trump for a fool,” the Kentucky Republican wrote Friday. “If Administration officials are more concerned with appeasing Putin than securing real peace, then the President ought to find new advisors.”
