MARINETTE, Wis. (WBAY) - The U.S. Navy has announced a “strategic shift away” from the Constellation-class frigate program, effectively cancelling the military ships that would have been built in Marinette.

In a statement from Secretary of the Navy John C. Phelan posted on Tuesday, plans for construction of the last four ships in the program have been terminated.

“We greatly value the shipbuilders of Wisconsin and Michigan,” Phelan said. “While work continues on the first two ships, those ships remain under review as we work through this strategic shift.”

Fincantieri Marinette Marine confirmed the decision in a statement on the company’s website on Tuesday.

While these construction plans have been cancelled, Fincantieri says other orders are coming.
