MADISON (WKOW) -- Wisconsin hunters are off to a strong start this gun deer season, registering more deer during opening weekend than they did last year.
According to the DNR, hunters registered 4 percent more deer overall. The antlered deer harvest climbed to 48,000, while antlerless registrations jumped 7 percent.
The DNR says snow expected in parts of Wisconsin over the next few days will likely affect the second half of the season.
"All we can hope at this point is that it will improve opportunity as long as the conditions hold out. After the storm passes, it will provide better conditions," said Jeff Pritzl, DNR deer program specialist.
The gun deer season runs through Sunday.
The DNR is encouraging hunters to donate additional deer to its venison donation program.
