LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - A crushed motorcycle, broken gear and first responders rushing in. Sept. 21, 2024, was the day everything changed for Joel Gustafson.
Gustafson, administrator of Surgical Associates PC in Lincoln, was riding his Harley Davidson less than a mile from home near 33rd Street and Nebraska Parkway when a delivery van turned in front of him.
“I laid my motorcycle down underneath the van and he drove over me,” Gustafson said.
He was rushed to Bryan Medical Trauma Center unconscious, in shock and bleeding severely. Trauma nurse practitioner Sandy Kirchner was among the first to treat him.
“He was pale, he was not breathing very well or not really supporting his airway at all and he was tachycardic, so he was in a state of shock so we knew we had to act very quickly,” she
