OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - As we dive into the holiday season, its a time for many of us to unwind and spend time with our loved ones.

Unfortunately though, accidents can happen if you aren’t careful.

According to the American Red Cross, home fires increase significantly during the holidays.

Josh Murray from the Red Cross said the number of home fires they respond to during the holidays goes up 20% compared to the rest of the year.

He said the number one thing to remembers is to stay in the kitchen the whole time you’re making your meal.

Don’t forget to use a timer to remind yourself that your stove or oven is on.

Also avoid wearing loose clothing or dangling sleeves while cooking.
