100 Years Ago, 1925: Rev. J.R. Bennett, 68, pastor of the Providence Baptist Church, Second and Pusey streets, was found dead at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Bessie Hawkins, of St. Louis, yesterday morning, according to a telegram received by his wife, Mrs. Ruth L. Bennett, head of the Ruth L. Bennett Improvement Club, this city. Rev. Bennett, who had been a resident of Chester for a number of years, left Chester several weeks ago for Little Rock, Arkansas, to attend the Founders’ Day exercise of the Baptist College. He was one of the founders of the institution.
