MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - On November 28, 1946, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade hit the TV airwaves for the first time on NBC.

Not everyone was able to tune in, as the parade was only shown locally in New York City.

The parade has since grown into a national broadcast, and a tradition for many families during the holidays.

The first Macy’s parade was held in 1924, starting out as a Christmas parade. The event was renamed for Thanksgiving three years later.

Before TV broadcasts, people who did not attend the parade in person could imagine what the balloons and performers looked like by listening to it on the radio. Those broadcasts started in 1932.
