Motorists could face annual mileage verification at MOT centres as part of Rachel Reeves' pay-per-mile vehicle tax proposals. Electric car owners will be liable for a 3p-per-mile levy, with drivers required to estimate their annual mileage in advance before having it confirmed yearly.

The scheme will see EV motorists estimate their yearly mileage and pay 3p per mile alongside their vehicle excise duty, whilst plug-in hybrid vehicles will incur a 1.5p per mile charge.

This means an average EV driver covering 8,500 miles annually could expect to pay around £255 per year. According to The Telegraph, odometer readings will need to be verified at MOT centres to confirm these self-declared
