Most cases of prostate cancer develop in men aged over 50
A Government advisory committee has concluded that prostate cancer screening should not be routinely offered to the majority of men across the UK. In draft guidance, the UK National Screening Committee (UKNSC) stated it would not recommend population-wide screening using the prostate specific antigen (PSA) test, as it "is likely to cause more harm than good".
Specialists are awaiting results from a major trial initiated by Prostate Cancer UK last week, examining whether combining PSA with additional tests, such as rapid MRI scans, might justify a recommendation for nationwide screening.
