The driver mistakenly pressed the gas pedal instead of the brake, causing the vehicle to launch into the channel, police said. The windshield broke when it hit the water, allowing the women, aged 18 and 20, to escape.

After about four minutes in the water, they found a nearby ladder, climbed out, then went to a nearby house to called for help, police added.

The channel where the incident occurred is about six metres deep. The harbour master and federal docks were notified of the submerged vehicle to address the situation.
