Americans are seeing more adverse interactions as prescribed drugs are increasingly becoming a part of their health regimen.
A Civic Science poll reports that the use of maintenance prescription drugs has shifted dramatically, as the percentage of adults who report taking at least one prescription medication per day rose to 70 percent in 2023, an increase of 14 percent since 2019. Those taking four or more prescription drugs daily has increased from 18 percent to 24 percent.
“Older populations are at higher risk because they are on more medications,” said Monica Socha, a UToledo Health pharmacist and manager of UToledo’s Main Campus Pharmacy.
