Advocates are raising concerns about a report from Immigration and Customs Enforcement showing a 31% increase in Nevada detainees since mid-September, with one activist saying detention facilities here are not equipped to house and care for the expanded population.

“That’s why people get hurt. This is how people get sick. This is how people die in detention,” said Leo Murrieta, director of immigrant advocacy organization Make the Road Action Nevada.

The report shows 600 detainees in the state as of Nov. 10, around 160 more than there were two months earlier. The vast majority of those detainees — 461 people — are housed at Nevada Southern Detention Center in Pahrump.
