MOORHEAD — The return of a popular seasonal attraction in Moorhead is bringing light to cold, dark winter nights — literally.

Mary’s Tunnel, a 90-foot long tunnel of lights, has returned to Viking Ship Park, behind Moorhead’s Hjemkomst Center.

The tunnel was first put up by Moorhead City Manager Dan Mahli and Steve French in 2021. After a few years of setting up the lights alongside the area’s Frostival celebration, the tunnel did not make an appearance for the event in 2024 or 2025.

French, now community engagement specialist for Moorhead Parks and Recreation, said the glittering walkway is one of the ways he’s trying to make a cold and dark season more fun.

“We stack more and more things that make winter fun,” French said. “This was just another one of those kinds of fun things.”
