Most Americans consume too much sodium, also known as salt. The federal recommendation for sodium intake is less than 2,300 milligrams per day, but Americans, on average, consume more than 3,300 milligrams per day.

Excess salt raises your risk for high blood pressure, which, in turn, can lead to heart disease and stroke. To learn how to cut back on sodium, we spoke with Stephani Johnson, DCN, RDN , adjunct professor in the department of clinical and preventive nutrition sciences at Rutgers University School of Health Professions.

Q: What are your best tips for cutting back on salt in your diet?

Johnson: Monitoring your salt intake is important because consuming too much sodium can negatively affect blood pressure , an impact that is more pronounced in some people than others.
