NATO countries have taken emergency action after four Russian fighter jets reportedly flew toward their country's western border with Poland.

The MiG-31 aircraft sparked an urgent response with Poland and Germany both placing their air defence systems on high alert, German media outlet Bild a Sonntag reported, citing NATO sources.

A German Air Force spokesperson told the outlet: "There was activity in Russian airspace on Friday, and the air defence forces deployed in Poland responded. This included the two Patriot systems of the Air Force."
