When hiring him two years ago , Tulane knew football coach Jon Sumrall might not stay long if he maintained the recent success of predecessor Willie Fritz.

That possibility became a reality on Sunday morning when multiple outlets reported he had agreed to leave for the open Florida job a day after the Green Wave clinched its fourth consecutive appearance in the American Conference championship game and the host role for the third time in four seasons.

All indications are Sumrall will coach Tulane against North Texas at Yulman Stadium on Friday. It is less clear whether he would continue to coach the Green Wave if it reaches the College Football Playoff, although he made his intentions clear on Saturday night .
