A man once sentenced to death for the rape and murder of a Worcester teenager 50 years ago will remain in prison after the state Parole Board denied his bid for release.
Stephen Richmond was convicted of first-degree murder and rape in the death of a 17-year-old girl in 1975 and was sentenced to death, but the state’s Supreme Judicial Court overturned the convictions.
In 1977, Richmond was again convicted on both counts and was sentenced to concurrent life sentences without the possibility of parole.
Richmond became parole eligible after the SJC ruled last year that the minimum age a person can be sentenced to life without parole is 21 , up from 18. Richmond was 19 when he committed the killing, according to the parole board.
