CHARLESTON — South Carolina’s 2025 hurricane season came to a close Nov. 30.

It was a relatively peaceful year for the Palmetto State, although the looming threat of extra-strong hurricanes became more acute, worrying meteorologists and foreshadowing future anxieties. And the season reminded us the damage that cyclones can do, even when they are far away and have no direct impact on South Carolina.

July’s Tropical Storm Chantal brought some rainfall, gusty winds and surfable waves to the areas around Myrtle Beach, and there was plenty of worrisome erosion on local beaches from storms passing far off-shore.
