LINCOLN, Neb. (WOWT) - Did you know Nebraska’s state capitol is its fifth?

On this day in 1868, builders finished work on the third capitol.

According to the Nebraska Historical Society, newspapers in Omaha ridiculed the decision to move the capitol to Lincoln, saying nobody will ever go there who does not go to the Legislature, the lunatic asylum, the penitentiary or some of the state institutions.

In those days, there was not much in Lincoln.

The building was built very quickly to get ready for the Legislature and started to fall apart, leading to the fourth capitol, which was not built much better.
