The shooting of two National Guardsmen in Washington, D.C., has predictably led to yet another toxic round of anti-immigrant backlash from President Donald Trump and the Republican Party. The death of Army Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, 20, has all the ingredients needed to start a new culture war. It doesn’t help that some Democrats and prominent left-leaning writers have blamed the Guard deployments for her death, as if needlessly sending troops into a major city is asking for a fatality. It isn’t. Beckstrom should not have died, and her blood is not on Trump’s hands.
But this sort of nuance is getting lost in a tide of anti-immigrant resentment since the accused shooter is an Afghan refugee who arrived in the U.S. through an asylum program overseen by the Biden administration. It does
