SAGINAW, MI — A Lansing man has tacitly taken responsiblity for killing a Saginaw man as he walked through downtown two years ago. In exchange, prosecutors agreed to dismiss charges from crimes he allegedly committed while on the lam.

Douglas L. Gengler, 53, in early November appeared before Saginaw County Circuit Judge Manvel Trice III and pleaded no contest to failing to stop at a personal injury accident resulting in death, a five-year felony. The charge stems from the December 2023 death of Edward L. “Fast Ed” Nichols, 55.

Gengler pleaded as a fourth-time habitual offender. His advisory sentencing guidelines have been calculated at one to four years. Judge Trice indicated Gengler’s minimum sentence will be capped at 38 months, or a little more than three years.
