WASHINGTON — If your fridge is still stocked with leftover turkey, stuffing or mac and cheese, get eating.
Experts say Monday is the final day to safely eat Thanksgiving leftovers. According to health experts, refrigerated leftovers should be consumed within three to four days. After that point, the risk of foodborne illness increases.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture similar holiday guidance, that the Monday after Thanksgiving is generally the last safe day to eat leftovers, like turkey. This year, that falls on Dec. 1.
By the fourth day, bacteria can begin to grow, causing food to be unsafe. Refrigeration just slows that process initially, the USDA says.
