BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WBRC ) - The holidays are often a time of giving, but sometimes the charities you’re giving to can be a scam. This holiday season, FBI Birmingham is sharing tips to help stay safe.

FBI Birmingham says charity fraud is where scammers set up fake charities to take advantage of your kindness and line their pockets.

“While these scams can occur at any time, they are especially prevalent after damaging events like hurricane, flash floods, forest fires and during the holiday when generosity is at its highest,” wrote FBI Birmingham.

FBI Birmingham says legitimate charities to do help communities who are affected by these events, but the scammers compete with legitimate charities to divert donations away from those who need it most and instead the money goes back to the fak
