Bomb Squad called to Castine Historical Society to dispose historic cannonballs

CASTINE, Maine (WABI) - Maine State Police Bomb Squad was called to Castine Monday after the discovery of two historical items.

The Castine Historical Society says they discovered black powder cannonballs in their collection that had not yet exploded.

The historical society says they cannonballs were from the War of 1812.

Upon discovery, the bomb squad was called in.

CHS says officials were able to safely dispose of the cannonballs.

Castine Historical Society said they do not know where the cannonballs originally came from.
