Stafford County Sheriff

A Northern Virginia man who deputies say was tearing up I-95 at more than 100 mph late Friday night didn’t exactly help his case when he stepped out of the car — because the beer can, the booze bottle, and the smell apparently got there first.

The Stafford County Sheriff’s Office said the stop happened in the northbound lanes of I-95 near mile marker 145 on Friday, Nov. 29, shortly before 11:45 p.m.

A first sergeant spotted a driver flying down the highway at 105 mph in a 65, and even passing another car on the right shoulder, officials said. A deputy rolled up to assist moments later.

Once the car finally pulled over, deputies said the driver’s eyes were “red and glassy,” and a Budweiser can sat in the door cup holder.

An unopened bottle of alcohol was right next to it. Deputies said “an odor of alcoholic beverage was noted emanating from the driver’s person,” and things didn’t improve after field sobriety tests.

The driver — identified in the arrest record as Frank Armenteros, 36, of Alexandria — was taken into custody. Deputies said they later found two firearms stuffed inside a duffel bag on the passenger seat.

It wasn’t Armenteros’ first time facing DUI trouble.

  • Deputies charged him with:
  • Driving under the influence (third or subsequent offense);
  • Reckless driving;
  • Driving on a suspended license;
  • Two counts of possession of a concealed weapon;
  • Passing on the shoulder.

Armenteros was taken to the Rappahannock Regional Jail and held without bond. No details about his next court appearance have been released by the sheriff's office.
