A historic Connecticut pizzeria said a Thanksgiving fire that caused about $15,000 in damage was intentionally set.
The fire at Roseland’s Apizza in Derby was reported around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 27, firefighters said. The blaze was contained to a shed behind the nearly 90-year-old pizzeria at 350 Hawthorne Ave., after a neighbor spotted the flames and called 911.
Owners of the Derby pizza shop said the blaze was intentionally set.
"Last night, while celebrating Thanksgiving with our families, our business was the target of arson," the restaurant posted on Facebook. "We are grateful to report that no one was injured. We extend our sincere thanks to the Derby Fire Department, the surrounding towns, and the bystanders who acted quickly—calling 911 and even using our exterior hose to help contain the fire before crews arrived. We also want to send a huge thank you to the Derby Police Department for their swift response!
"We have much to be thankful for this year. Thanks to the quick actions of everyone involved, the situation was prevented from becoming far worse."
The fire destroyed the shed and burned stored equipment, supplies, and several historical pieces from the pizzeria. Damage estimates total about $15,000, the owners told Fox 61.
Derby police charged Jose Guardiano, 27, with arson, criminal mischief, reckless endangerment, and breach of peace in the fire, the outlet reported.
The owners said a newly installed surveillance system led to the arrest.
