It's not known what sparked a fire that severely damaged the home of Robert Wood on Highway 190, east of Jasper, not far from the Newton County line on Tuesday morning.

The volunteers of the Newton Fire Department were dispatched to the location shortly before 11:00 when it was reported that the single story wood frame structure was on fire. However, upon their arrival at the scene, the firefighters from Newton soon called for help from the East End Fire Department at Holly Springs.

Firemen from both departments battled the blaze and soon had it control. However, witnesses at the scene said it was a passing motorist that save the day by seeing that the house was on fire and using a garden hose.

No one was home when the fire broke out and no injuries resulted from the incident.
