SALEM, Ore. — Salem is the latest in a growing list of Oregon cities to declare a state of emergency over Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity in the city.
Dozens of community members spoke at Monday night's Salem City Council meeting , calling for an end to ICE arrests using "unconstitutional" tactics. The city ultimately voted 6-3 in favor of the resolution .
The possibility of arrests being made in schools was a huge focus during the meeting.
"I've been asked, 'is it safe to keep coming to school, Miss B.? What would you do if La Migra came into our classroom right now?'" said one teacher who spoke at the meeting. "I've overheard students talking about what they would do if a masked man smashed their car window and detained them at gunpoint."
