MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) - Governor Phil Scott on Tuesday defended Afghan refugees living in Vermont, saying it is unfair to blame an entire group of people for the actions of one individual.
The statement comes as the man accused of shooting two National Guard soldiers near the White House last week pleaded not guilty Tuesday to first-degree murder and assault charges.
Rahmanullah Lakanwal, a 29-year-old Afghan national, is accused of fatally shooting West Virginia National Guard Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, 20, and wounding Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, 24.
