Samsung has announced its latest creation, a trifold cell phone with three screens – and while some techies are thrilled, other social media users and customers aren’t really sure how to feel about it.
Calling the phone the Galaxy Z TriFold, Samsung said in a Dec. 1 press release that the device has an inward-folding design that protects the phone’s main display.
At its thinnest point, the phone measures 3.9 millimeters, Samsung said. When opened, the phone measures 10 inches, making it the largest screen on a Samsung phone, and it "folds twice into a pocketable phone," the company said.
Once news of the phone began to circulate online, social media users let the company know how they felt, with some comparing the device to a tablet and others saying the phone should actually be called a "bi-fold" phone since technically, users only fold the screens twice to close it.
When contacted by USA TODAY on Dec. 2, Samsung declined to comment on pricing, but said the company would have details in early 2026. The phone is rumored to be priced around $2,500 and $3,000, according to tech outlets SamMobile and 9to5Google.
Customers in Korea will be able to buy the phone on Dec. 12, followed by customers in China, Taiwan, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates. It will hit the U.S. during the first quarter of 2026. The company said when the phone launches, it will be available at select stores.
In the meantime, here’s what to know about the Galaxy Z TriFold, and what social media users have to say about it.
Users compare Samsung to American, Chinese competitors
Samsung said in its press release that it engineered the phone for "easy opening and closing, with an auto-alarm alerting the user of incorrect folding through a series of on-screen alerts and vibrations."
Based on videos circulating online, the correct way to close the TriFold is by holding it with the outer screen upright, and folding the screen to the left twice.
The company added that the TriFold is equipped with the biggest battery Samsung has ever installed in a foldable phone.
Samsung said each phone will undergo an inspection, including CT scanning of the circuit board to make sure the device has been made correctly.
Social media users compared Samsung’s latest phone to some of the company’s competitors, including American tech company Apple, and Chinese manufacturer Huawei. The Huawei Mate XT Ultimate Design has a 10.2-inch display, according to the company’s website.
"The Galaxy Z TriFold has a unique way of opening and unfolding," wrote X user and tech enthusiast @evanverse7. "The Huawei Mate XT's unfolding may appeal more to others, but at least the Galaxy Z TriFold's way of unfolding protects the inner display."
Screen may scratch too easily, social media user says
One X user and techie, @OutofGalaxyy, noted that the Galaxy Z TriFold’s screen is "WAY too soft and scratches too easily ... this is the only reason why I think $2,000+ foldables aren’t worth it."
Others mentioned how much easier it is to multitask on the TriFold, noting that it looks "great."
And one X user, @TheMattSmothers, poked fun at the phone and said it looks like "SpongeBob" character Squidward working on his tan.
TM Roh, Chief Executive Officer, President, and Head of Device eXperience (DX) Division at Samsung Electronics, said in the Dec. 1 press release that Samsung is constantly in a "relentless pursuit of new possibilities."
"Through years of innovation in foldable form factors, Galaxy Z TriFold solves one of the mobile industry’s longest-standing challenges – delivering the perfect balance between portability, premium performance, and productivity all in one device," Roh said.
