U.S. judge for East TN district to take senior status, creating vacancy on federal bench

U.S. District Judge Thomas Varlan, who has presided over the Eastern District of Tennessee for more than two decades, announced he will take to senior status next year. President Donald Trump will have the opportunity to nominate a candidate to fill the vacancy on the bench, which must be confirmed by the U.S. Senate.
