KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — U.S. District Court Judge Thomas A. Varlan, esteemed for his quiet, steady and wise hand over 22 years on the Knoxville federal bench, announced Tuesday he's taking senior status.

"It has been my honor and privilege to have served our community and nation as a district court judge," Varlan said in a statement released Tuesday afternoon. "I look forward to continuing to render substantial service to the court as a senior judge."

The transition takes effect October 2026. With senior status, Varlan will continue to hear cases, but at a reduced load.

Many judges with senior status in the Eastern District of Tennessee end up carrying active dockets.

President George W. Bush nominated him for the bench in 2003. The U.S. Senate approved his appointment that same year 97-0.
