AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) — Augusta Commission members reconvened Tuesday to deal with a $21 million deficit they’ve failed to resolve as they face a deadline to approve next year’s budget.

They still failed to resolve it Tuesday, putting off the tough choices for another two weeks.

They had intended last week to confront the deficit and pass a budget , but ultimately decided to put it off until Tuesday. But after discussing it all day, they decided to come back together at 9 a.m. Dec. 16.

That’s cutting it close to the Dec. 31 deadline.

And what if they miss that deadline?

“Government shutdown — basically what recently happened at the federal level would happen here,” Interim General Counsel James Plunkett said Tuesday.
