Eddie Lin was ceremonially sworn in Tuesday as the newest member of the Seattle City Council, tilting the body modestly to the left.

Lin is the first of this November’s slate of newly elected Seattle lawmakers to take office. His predecessor, Mark Solomon, was an interim appointee filling the vacancy left by Tammy Morales.

“The resources and tools that we need, that our kids and our elders need to flourish, are right here in this room and all around us,” he said in a speech Tuesday.

Lin, formerly a lawyer working with the city’s Office of Housing, comes into his new job as one of a small wave of progressives who won their contests last month. The two elections preceding this year’s, in 2021 and 2023, had largely wiped out the city’s progressive left from city government.
