Barrington resident Jon Mellor has been a competitive runner for more than three decades. And in that time, he has trained on high school and college tracks all over the country — Virginia, Michigan, Connecticut, Massachusetts and California.

When work finished on the new track at Barrington High School, Mellor was excited to try it out. Then he learned it was off limits to the public.

“I have never once seen a track that was closed to public use,” Mellor wrote in a message to the Barrington Times.
