Merseyside Police made 24 arrests in just 24 hours as part of Operation Limit, the national festive drink and drug driving crackdown running from December 1 to January 1.

The force confirmed the figures in a post on its Roads Policing Unit X account, warning motorists officers are out in force throughout the Christmas period. The post read: "The first 24 hours of Op Limit has resulted in 24 arrests for drink and drug driving. Do people really not get that we are out in force catching these selfish drivers? Don’t let number 25 be you. Enjoy your time safely."

Operation Limit aims to reduce road traffic collisions during the festive season, a period when drink and drug driving typically increases.
