KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - Kansas City’s World Cup excitement just got bigger. Kansas City is now being considered to host the 2031 FIFA Women’s World Cup. It’s one of 14 cities included in the bid book for the event.
Kathy Nelson, the president and CEO of Visit KC and the Kansas City Sports Commission, said it’s been an undertaking.
It started with the U.S. Soccer Federation reaching out to dozens of potential host cities.
“I was in one meeting with 30 to 40 cities and 70 people on a call,” Nelson said.
U.S. Soccer then contacted other countries to create the united four-country bid to host. After that, individual cities submitted letters of interest to the national soccer federations. She noted that the work on getting the 2026 FIFA World Cup began nearly 10 years ago.
